Rockefeller SR & Henry Flagler & by Jabez Abel Bostwick. John D. Rockefeller Sr. organized the Standard Oil Company in 1870, gained a monopoly in the oil business, and organized the Standard Oil Trust in January 1882; it was dissolved by court decree in 1892. This stock certificate is numbered #333 which came from the first ledger, dated April 1882 which makes them highly valuable. Highly ornate, partly engraved Stock Certificate for 500 shares of the Standard Oil Trust; oblong folio,  to JJ Vandergrift. Signed byJ D Rockefeller (1839-1937) as President. Countersigned by Henry M. Flagler (1830-1913) as Secretary and by J A Bostwick (1830-1892) as Treasurer. There is an engraved vignette of the United States Capitol, several people and a horse driven carriage are seen in front of the building on the certificate. A mark of cancellation dated 1884 is shown on the left. The receipt is attached. Fine condition, and lightly creased with light vertical folds that have perhaps been refolded many times over the years. Please note that there are two 1” rips through signatures of Rockefeller and Bostwick and 1/4" rip through Flagler's signature. There are also 2 small pin holes that are located on  the left of certificate. These are viewable when held to the light. The signatures are not affected much by the rips. Henry Flagler was associated with Rockefeller in the development of the Standard Oil Company; he later organized the Florida East Coast Railway and built great hotels at Florida shore resorts. These 500-share certificates were probably designed to be used for large transactions, as "Shares $100 each" is engraved at the top; 500 shares amounted to $50,000, a substantial amount of money at that time. Certificate alone measures 11 ½ inches by 7 6/10 inches, total certificate with stub attached, measures a total of 14 inches by 7 6/10 inch.
