The close "AM" means that there were a few coins that were actually struck from dies that were originally designed for the business strike of this particular year. This coin is struck as ultra cameo or a deep cameo look. As you can see, this coin was just recently graded into NGCs new edge view slab. It is a great coin for a registry set. What I know for fact is that NGC has only graded 7 of these coins, and this is one of the coins which is tied for the finest known for this grade. I do not know if the population report of 7 is accurate, as I do not know how many of these coins have been broken out and resubmitted to try and receive the ultimate PF 70 grade. I also do not know what PCGS's population report is. However I have spoken to a few friends in the industry, and their feelings are that there are probably less than 15 known of these coins.This coin could be an extremely rare coin, which might turn out to be a great investment for the future.The mint also made this error in 1999 with the close "AM" but there are hundreds of the 1999-S close "AM" known. As you can see in comparison that would make this 1998-S an extremely rare coin. The collectors have been able to find plenty of the 1999s, but very few of these 1998s have shown up or been found.The coin itself, as you can see in the pictures, is an extremely beautiful, near perfect stunning coin, with a cameo that pops right out of the fields.This is a nice PQ (Premium Quality) Coin for the grade. We submit a considerable number of coins for certification, and have decided to try listing on ebay some of the nicer coins that we either purchased or submitted and felt were PQ, rather than carry them to shows like we have been for the past few years.Obviously, depending on the angle you shoot a picture from, one way it has a tendancy to show the luster, but if you shoot it straight down, which is the way I took these pictures, it shows more accuracy for details, as well as marks.
