Description
1904 $20 Liberty. PCGS graded Proof 65 Cameo. Although the 1904 Liberty double eagle is the single most common date in the series in business strike format, proofs of this date are just as rare as any other date in the last decade of this design. Only 98 of these proofs were coined, and a little more than half that number still exist today. When Walter Breen penned his Proof Coin Encyclopedia, he included die characteristics for many of the proof coinage issues. For example, he described the obverse as: "Date to right, slanting down; left base of 1 barely right of left edge, right base of 4 right of center of dentils." The example that we are offering appears to be different, with the left base of 1 about over center of a dentil and the right base of 4 nearly over the right edge of a dentil. It is possible that the different positions may actually be a result of differing perspectives on the part of individual viewers. The date clearly appears to slant down to th e right. A tiny area of polish is visible just above Liberty's earlobe, with swirling die polishing lines in that area. The reverse is from the new hub of 1900, with a smooth curve to the back of the eagle's neck. The old hub features feathers that protruded into the field. This is a nearly flawless Gem with bright yellow-gold color and excellent contrast. The fields are deeply mirrored with satiny luster on the devices. The design motifs are nicely frosted, unlike most proofs from this period that had polished devices. This example is a glittering jewel that completely lacks identifying characteristics. Only a few faint hairlines limit the grade. Population: 7 in 65, 0 finer (11/06). Photo (PCGS # 9120). Estimated Value $100,000 - 150,000. Our item number 71 9031 W.
