Description
ATTENTION CHEAP EBAY COLLECTORS ---- ONCE THIS LISTING ENDS, IT WILL BE GOING TO A FRIEND OF MINE TO SELL AT THE COIN SHOW AT THE WALDORF ASTORIA THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 9, 2009. SO DON'T THINK I AM DESPERATE AND WILL ACCEPT YOUR LOWER OFFERS FOR THIS UNIQUE EXAMPLE, I'M NOT GOING LOWER THAN THE PRICE SHOWN. I HAVE LOST COUNT AT THE NUMBER OF TIMES PEOPLE E-MAIL ME AFTER I DON'T RE-LIST AN ITEM AND EXPRESS DISMAY WHEN I SAY IT WAS SOLD. EBAY IS BUT ONE (AND THE LOUSIEST BY FAR), OF MY MANY OUTLETS WHERE I SELL MY GOODS.A little over 1 inch in diameter. Made of silver (NOT silver-plated brass). Hebrew date of 1896 on reverse, from Lithuania. Rabbi Yitzchok Elchonon Spector was a famous Lithuanian Rabbi who was among the most influential Jews of his time in helping convince the Russian government for a better treatment of his fellow Jews. All known and published examples of this medal are in brass, NONE are known in silver.Shown in the last photo is from an auction held in New York City in 2004. Notice the estimate of $500 - $700 for that brass example (not including the 20% buyers commission and 8.375% New York sales tax the winning bidder had to pay). The catalog is in error when it states Poland as the country of origin. Please see the book “Jewish Tradition in Art” by Isaiah Shachar, which describes and illustrates the brass example of this Rabbi Spector medal in the collection of the Israel Museum.Because 93% of the Jewish population of Lithuania were murdered during World War Two (a higher rate than even Poland, which is incorrectly assumed by many to be the most massacred European country of its Jews at 90%), this is most likely the reason why no examples of this medal are known in silver.Shipping including delivery confirmation is included in the purchase price, for buyers outside the USA this will be sent by registered airmail.
